#578 The Patagonian Sea in Crisis: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Proposals for a Sustainable Process
Since 2003, FARN has been researching the strengths and weaknesses of institutional, local, regional, and international regulation regarding sustainable progress in the Patagonia Sea by examining diverse interests and activities in the area, as well as by identifying actors and ecosystem needs based on previous multi-sector workshops and expert opinion. The intention of the work for this event is to share legal and institutional causes of the Patagonian crisis with the purpose of sharing both the international experience with the subject and the possible alternative approaches, treatments, and solutions – while keeping in mind the establishment of legislative guidelines directed towards sustainable progress in the area.
The challenge of the application and implementation of Precautionary Principle on the part of administrative and judicial authorities regarding conservation and management of biodiversity and natural resources has been the objective of FARN’s Precautionary Principle Project. The Environmental Law Commission of UICN has also produced the Practical Guide for applying the principle. Therefore, the objective of this meeting is to share these investigations in order to create a space to exchange concrete experiences of applying the principle at an international level, analyzing both the circumstances that favor or hinder its application as well as the unresolved matter in the area.
575 Private Reservation: Is It Possible to Preserve, Produce, and Profit?
This workshop aims to analyze possibilities of conciliation of interests between social, public, and economic sectors in order to bring private conservation to the international level, with an emphasis on design and application of both legal and economic instruments that favor and provide incentives for preserving private land. We will analyze experiences from successful activities related to private conservation as well as the need to strengthen and develop local and governmental capacities in order to fulfill this objective.
