The program has developed a system for receiving claims on the violation of the right to a safe and healthy environment. A team of environmental lawyers is on hand to provide free legal advice.

Procedure:

The claims and complaints that are received by FARN are passed on for analysis to the corresponding professionals in the program. The program offers free legal advice on all claims and complaints. Based on the complaints received, the program will select and offer free legal support to a few leading cases. A leading case is that which:

• involves environmental problems that are a priority in the metropolitan region;
  
• will act as a case model for people taking actions on similar issues;
  
• affects a significant number of people, especially those who face barriers to access to justice; and
• might establish a legal precedent.
  

Given the importance of the media in these types of actions, the communications office will send out press releases on the cases and activities of the program.
