The role judges and prosecutors play in environmental compliance and enforcement in Latin America is crucial. The Symposium of Judges and Prosecutors and the 1st Conference on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement in Latin America in 2002, and the Mexico Declaration of 2000, have clearly emphasized the importance of their role in achieving sustainable development.
The purpose of the event was to elaborate a plan of activities and to make specific proposals regarding needs and interests at both national and regional levels for the institutional strengthening of judges and prosecutors in the area of environmental law in Latin America.
