Networks

Through the Information Center, FARN participates in the Sustainable Development Communications Network (SDCN), the Economic and Social Information Network (UNIRED), and the National Network of Law and Legal Libraries (JURIRED).

Sustainable Development Communications Network

The Sustainable Development Communications Network (SDCN) is a group of leading non-governmental organizations working together to find ways of using the Internet to meet the goals of sustainable development.

The SD Gateway (Sustainable Development Gateway) integrates the on-line information developed by SDCN members about sustainable development.

SIDALC

Since 1999, the Inter-American Cooperation Institute for Agriculture (IICA), through its Information and Communication Office, establishes the Agricultural Information and Documentation System of Latin America and the Caribbean (SIDALC), a network of agropecuary information services of and for the Hemisphere, whose goal is to satisfy the information needs of the scientific community, studensts, development institutions, businessmen and rural community.

This hemispheric network has its grounds in the information resources and the installed capacity of the IICA and of the insititutions, which are active part of the Libraries' National Networks, forming an agricultural mega database called Agri2000. FARN participates in Agri2000 with its bibliographic database.

UNIRED
Established in 1989, the Red de Redes de Información Económica y Social (UNIRED) is a cooperative and decentralized system consisting of over one hundred librarians from the public and private sector and international organizations. The aim of the network is to share resources and exchange information in an efficient manner to satisfy the growing demands for products and services by users.

Among other activities, UNIRED has published the Information Unit Review (Reseña de Unidades de Información) and a Bibliographic Database CD-ROM of libraries participating in the network from 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. In this final year, there were over one million registrations. Consultations of the 2001 database can be made through the Internet version.

JURIRED
JURIRED is the National Network of Law and Legal Libraries, which was born in response to the need for a cooperative mechanism creating access to existing information in the libraries of institutions specializing in legal topics.

The Network was formed in 1997 with the main objectives of sharing resources, publications, multiplying services and products, favoring the interchange and access to information, creating catalogues, organizing training activities, defining cooperation policies, developing joint projects, etc.

Some highlights of the services offered: interlibrary loans, archive transfers, document summaries, annual meetings and continuous training. The edition of the "Argentine Directory of Law Libraries" is one of the Network's most notable products.
