Trade and Sustainable
Development Area
Reflecting FARN's decision to intensify the investigation and focus of
work on the relations between trade, environment, investment and development,
the Area of Trade and Sustainable Development was set up within the Foundation
in June 2003. The Area was basically set up on the basis of a set of projects
and activities being undertaken by the Area of Research and Training,
and which initially set the direction for this new field of action.
The objectives of the Trade and Sustainable Development Area are:
- to disseminate information and promote spaces for discussion on the
issues of trade, investment and environment, focusing on the need for
predominantly intersectorial participation;
- to undertake projects of multidisciplinary investigation that may
generate critical information, e.g. sectorial research to assess the
sustainability of agreements, plans, programs and trade policies; and
- to promote initiatives that interrelate production and commercial
activities with their environmental aspects in order to secure sustainable
development.
